How to become a Freemason

You may ask yourself, "Why have I not been asked to join?" That is because unlike the members of other fraternal organizations, Masons do not solicit anyone to become a member.

Many men live a lifetime and never know that they must ask for admission to the world's oldest, most purposeful and greatest fraternity. They do not realize that they will not be invited. They must come of their own freewill and accord without persuasion. They must ask a Mason for a petition for membership.

Freemasonry, the worlds oldest and most respected  Fraternity, encourages good men to become better men by promoting a life devoted to high ideals, community service and benevolence.

Each has a personal belief in a Supreme Being and a determination to conduct himself in a manner that will earn the respect and trust of others.

To become a Freemason you must:

  • Be a man at least 21 years of age

  • Be of good moral character

  • Have a personal belief in a Supreme Being

  • Decide to become a Mason of "your own free will and accord"

  • Be loyal to your country

  • Dedicated to providing for your own family

  • Have a sincere determination to conduct yourself in a manner that
will earn the respect and trust of others

  • Possess a desire to help others through community service and
    universal benevolence

Follow these steps to become a member:

  • Talk with someone you know who is a member of the Fraternity

  • If you do not know anyone who is a Mason, just contact a lodge in
your neighborhood and give him this petition-click here.

  • Masons do not solicit for members.  You'll need to express your
personal interest in joining the Fraternity

  • Complete a petition for membership and return it to your local lodge
    with your degree fees

  • Three members will meet with you to answer your questions

  • Your petition will be presented for secret ballot.  If accepted, you
will be notified to appear to receive the first of three Degrees of Masonry.

Within the Family of Freemasonry, there are many different groups. When a man first joins, he becomes a member of a local Lodge. But he soon discovers that a whole new Masonic world has opened to him. Once he has joined the Lodge, he can also decide to join these other groups.

The Shriners are one of the most visible groups in the Masonic Family, because of the wonderful work of the Shriners Hospitals for Children and the Shrine East-West football game.

The Scottish Rite and York Rite are also quite well known.

For the ladies, we have a number of groups that are open to both men and women, such as the Eastern Star and the Amaranth. Our Youth Groups teach young men and women about the importance of honesty, integrity, leadership and strength of character.
